Follow Clare Balding’s advice for making the most of the great outdoors this Easter weekend, with a selection of her favourite routes from Walking Home.

If you’re planning on embarking on one of Clare’s favourite walks this bank holiday, here are her top tips:

The best feedback I’ve received from readers of Walking Home is that it makes people want to go for a walk. With that in mind, here are some suggestions for exploring the great British countryside.

You will need:

  • A good pair of walking boots and a decent pair of socks
  • An ordnance survey map
  • A rucksack with a pair of waterproof trousers, blister plasters and snacks
  • I’d take a dog as well but it’s not always practical – especially if you don’t have a dog of your own.

The main thing is to decide where you’re going to go and to get on with it. Stride out, aim for a pub for lunch and smile as you go. It’s the cheapest form of entertainment and I reckon it’s the best.
